Buford Pool Services Experts on Pool Equipment Freeze Protection

admin • January 10, 2014

Every year, Buford pool service experts find themselves repairing and replacing pool equipment because of freeze damage. If you have pool equipment that is not winterized, then the repairs can be costly. Your pump, heater, and filter can all suffer damage if the water freezes inside of the equipment.

Prevention of Freeze Damage:

  • All pool equipment and plumbing needs to be winterized, as well as the pool itself.
  • Your pump or pumps should keep running. All valves need to stay open.
  • Have your local Atlanta and Buford pool maintenance professionals install freeze protection equipment.

Winterization

Your pool can be partially winterized by draining all of the above ground equipment; pump, heater, filter, and any other equipment you may have. Pour or funnel pool antifreeze into every pipe that has water running through it. In order to do a full pool winterization, you will need to have the water blown out of all of the equipment and pipes, then plug the pipes in at the pool, so as to keep water out until you open the pool back up. For a complete pool services winterization, it is best to bring in the pool services professionals.

Pool Pump(s)

Whether you are in a mild climate location or one where severe cold weather is prominent, it is important to keep your pump running when freeze warnings are issued by the local weather authorities. If you use a timer clock, then you can remove it from the “off” setting, so the water runs continuously through the pipes until the weather warms back up. As long as the pipes have water moving through them, they will not freeze.

Additionally, if you want to avoid running your pump(s) all the time until the spring opening, then you can receive text or email alerts from weather.com when the area temps are going to drop to 35 – 37 degrees or below. By doing this, you can manually turn the pump(s) on for each occurrence of freezing weather.

Freeze Protection Equipment

You can have freeze protection equipment installed to turn the pool pump(s) on when the outside temperature reaches a certain degree. The equipment uses a sensor that measures the outside temps around the clock. Some of the more advanced pool controllers are able to open closed valves and even turn on other pumps you have, such as waterfall pumps and booster pumps.

Frozen Pool Equipment:

In the event that you do not do the things above, or you suffer from a winter power failure and your pool equipment does freeze, you should immediately:

  • Go to the breaker and shut off all power.
  • Put heavy blankets over the frozen pool equipment (wool works well).
  • Cautiously and safely put a small space heater on the inside of the tent.
  • Once the equipment thaws, inspect each piece for breaks or cracks.
  • If repairs are required from freeze damage, drain all of the water out of the equipment until repaired.
