It’s tempting to winterize your pool and forget about it for the rest of the season, but this isn’t in your pool’s best interests. It’s easy and doesn’t take much effort to maintain your pool during the winter, and you’ll be glad you did when the time comes around to open it back up again.
You don’t have to be using your poor or its equipment for it to sustain damage. Check your pool’s surface, filter, pump and heater regularly for any signs of damage. Replacing pool equipment isn’t cheap, so you want to make sure it remains in good shape throughout the season. If you maintain your pool during the winter and catch the damage early on, you may be able to repair rather than replace any damaged equipment.
Algae has difficulty growing in temperatures below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, so it’s normally not too much of an issue during the wintertime. But we all know what the Georgia weather has been like lately, so you want to be extra diligent about making sure that no algae is growing in your pool. If algae is allowed to grow for extended periods of time, it can damage your pool’s liner, equipment and even the concrete. You’ll also have less work when you reopen your pool for the summer if you’ve been regularly clearing away any algae.
While we don’t see much snow down here in Atlanta, we get our fair share of heavy rains, wind and even ice. These elements can damage or dislodge your pool cover , so regularly check to make sure it’s securely fit over and protecting your swimming pool to effectively maintain your pool during the winter.
Those of you with in-ground pools should make sure that the water bags or water blocks are holding your pool cover securely in place throughout the season. Those with above ground pools need to either check that the wall bags are holding the cover in place or that the air pillow is inflated and effectively holding up the cover. Also, make sure that the cover’s seal wrap or slips are secure and that the cover’s cable is tightened.
Along with making sure that your pool cover is secure, you also need to continuously remove any debris that lands on the cover. Debris can tear, rip and stretch out your pool cover, which leaves your pool susceptible to damage as well. Even if they don’t severely damage your pool cover, leaves and other accumulating debris weigh it down. And over time, this can compromise the cover’s effectiveness.
