Don’t Skimp On Pool Closings: Here’s Why.

Daniel Motes • Sep 13, 2017

As summer and the warmer Atlanta months come to a close, so do the fun and relaxing days by the pool. In order to protect your pool for the winter, you must close your pool properly. Failure to do so could result in hard-to-clean bacteria and algae build up and can make opening your pool challenging or delayed.

Closing Your Pool

When to Close Your Pool

Most people close their pools after Labor Day. However, in Atlanta and other parts of Georgia, warmer weather can stretch through October. The best time for you to close your pool is before the weather gets too cold. Trying to close your pool while you’re wearing mittens is not fun. Check your schedule, monitor the weather and try for late September. Better yet, close your pool somewhere in October.

How to Close Your Pool

There are several steps required when starting your pool closing . First you should make sure to remove and store pool accessories like ladders and diving boards in a dry place, such as an outside closet or shed. Next, you should add a phosphate remover and clean all dirt, leaves, and other debris out of the pool. Once your water is debris free, you should check the water level. If you aren’t expecting freezing temperatures in the winter, because you live in South Georgia, you should fill your pool to the top to where it’s almost overflowing. However, if your pool is in Atlanta or North Georgia, your water level should be 4-6 inches below the top of the pool.

You will also need to purchase a test kit to measure and adjust the pool’s alkalinity. It should be between 80-120ppm, and the pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6. After these levels have reached the correct amounts, you should shock and chlorinate your pool to kill bacteria and prevent algae growth. The last main step is to let your pump run for a full cycle before backwashing and then chemically clean your filter. You may want to add pool antifreeze and use an air pillow to place in the middle of the pool to prepare for the cold months. Lastly, you should use a safety cover or leaf net to protect your pool from getting dirty during the winter.

Why are Pool Closings Important?

Following these steps and monitoring the chemical levels monthly throughout the winter will make your pool easier to open in the spring. In addition, it will keep bacteria and algae build-up at a minimum, making your life much easier.
