Prevent Mid-Winter Pool Cover Disasters in Decatur If pool owners in Decatur want to ensure a smooth spring pool opening, then properly closing their pools for the winter is a must. The most critical component to closing your pool in preparation for the cold months is to precisely and tightly place the pool cover onto the pool.
Prevent Mid-Winter Pool Cover Disasters in Decatur
Don’t open up your pool in the spring to discover a shocking surprise or sad realization that you have lots to do and spend for your pool to be swim-ready. Keep an eye on your pool cover through the winter and if it is loose or falling into the pool water, take care of it immediately.
Winter Pool Cover Issues
Oh no! My Cover is in the Pool!
Your cover can fall inside the pool for a number of reasons; too much water weight on top of the solid cover, a pool leak, tree branches falling on the pool cover, and animals. Don’t panic, this is what you do to handle it. With at least 2 people (3-4 if possible), pull the solid cover out of the water by the edge and pull it to the pool desk. The edge can be weighed down with water bags, but don’t use other things. Bricks, cinder blocks, or heavy planters should never be used because they can get pulled into the water. Use a cover pump or submersible pump to start pumping water. You can take a vacuum hose to siphon more water off of the pool cover. Get the skimmer nets or leaf rakes out of storage to remove debris by gently bringing everything towards you. Scoop as much of the debris out as you can. To get debris closer to the edge, you can also use a pool brush. If the pool cover is deeply submerged, then use a garden vacuum hose. Only after all of the water is removed from the cover and all of the debris is removed from the pool, can you tighten the solid pool cover up to reset as the water on the surface recedes. Carefully inspect the solid pool cover for tears or holes.
If your pool has been neglected for an entire season or for years, then you will need to drain and clean the entire pool. All pool equipment will need to be inspected and repaired or replaced if damaged. The pool services professionals can come in to rectify the bacteria, phosphates, nitrates, and other undesirables in the water, as well as perform a full pool maintenance check.
